The UGM Library and Archives once again held a literacy event titled Sharing Knowledge, Spreading Benefits: Book Donation and Literacy Action for the Nation at SMP Muhammadiyah Kretek, Bantul, Yogyakarta, on Wednesday, Jul. 23, 2025.
This literacy initiative, themed ‘Reading to Become a Better Human Being’, began with the symbolic handover of donated books by Head of the Data and Information Systems Division of UGM Library and Archives, Yulistiarini Kumaraningrum, to Tri Inayah, Principal of SMP Muhammadiyah Kretek, Bantul.
Kumaraningrum stated that the donation represents the UGM Library and Archives’ commitment to promoting literacy while also contributing to community service.
She explained that the program is aimed at middle school students, particularly at SMP Muhammadiyah Kretek, as part of an effort to instill moral, social, and spiritual values through books and reflective discussions.
“Although we realize this initiative may not resolve the many challenges facing today’s younger generation, we hope it can at least offer a breath of fresh air amid the current character crisis,” she said.
Sarwono, a senior librarian at UGM, emphasized during the discussion and reflection session that literacy is not merely about reading texts, but about grasping deeper meaning.
Literacy, he explained, is a process of interpreting meaning through reading, analyzing, and understanding.
“It is through this process that we can learn to shape our character, by asking questions, engaging in reflection, and cultivating curiosity,” Sarwono elaborated.
The discussion session became even more engaging due to its interactive nature.
Students were encouraged to explore the meaning of literacy through reflection and exciting quizzes.
They also actively participated in dialogues on literacy.
“I was quite pleased, the discussion today was lively and warm, making the classroom truly feel like a space for living and joyful value-based learning,” said Sarwono.
Firli, a 7th-grade student and one of the participants expressed her appreciation and shared a heartfelt impression.
She said she was happy to be able to learn and interact with others during the event, and conveyed her gratitude to the organizing team.
“Thank you for coming to our school and holding such a fun event. I understand the meaning of literacy better now, and I really enjoyed taking part in the quiz and discussions with my friends,” said Firli.
