The President of Ehime University, Japan, Dr. Hiroshige Nishina, paid an official visit to Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2025. The meeting aimed to further develop cooperation between UGM and Ehime University in education, research, and publication, building on a partnership established since 2007.
UGM Rector, Professor Ova Emilia, expressed that the long-standing collaboration, particularly in student exchange programs, has provided valuable opportunities for students to broaden their perspectives and experiences.
“We are looking to expand the areas of collaboration,” said Rector Emilia.
UGM Vice-Rector for Research, Business Development, and Partnerships, Dr. Danang Sri Hadmoko, warmly welcomed the ongoing collaboration with Ehime University.
“We appreciate the significant contributions to UGM. I believe that cooperation between Japan and Indonesia through joint publications is among the most productive forms of collaboration,” he remarked.
Dr. Hiroshige Nishina highlighted that the involvement of students, researchers, and staff from both universities has been crucial in strengthening the partnership.
“This relationship is not one-sided, and that is very important,” said Dr. Nishina.

It is well known that the UGM Faculty of Agricultural Technology (FTP UGM) serves as the key driver of collaboration between UGM and Ehime University.
The partnership covers various activities, including community service, the Six-University Initiative Japan-Indonesia (SUIJI) consortium, joint publications, collaborative research, and academic mobility programs involving faculty members and international researchers, including guest lectures and other initiatives.
All these efforts contribute to fostering sustainable cooperation between the two institutions.
This aligns with Vice-Rector Hadmoko’s view, emphasizing the importance of exploring and strengthening synergies in education and joint research, particularly through programs such as the Sakura Science Program, a student exchange initiative by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).
Professor Osamu Kobayashi, one of the delegates from Ehime University, explained that the university offers online courses on food security and sustainable agriculture, as well as a program called the “Survival Course,” designed to encourage students to study at Ehime University.
