In the framework of Research Week 2010, Institute for Research and Community Services (LPPM)of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a workshop entitled Strengthening Higher Education Network – Local Government Planning for Disaster Risk Reduction Using Spatial Data. The event that last for three days from 13 to 15 July, 2010 presented guest speakers from Geo Nuclear Science New Zealand discussing the application of Policy, Planning in Disaster Risk Reduction Effort.
The workshop that was opened by UGM Rector, Prof. Ir. Sudjarwadi, M. Eng., Ph.D, at the University Club on Tuesday (13/7) presented keynote speaker the Minister of Public Works, Ir. Djoko Kirmanto, Dipl. HE. This workshop in the first day was marked by discussion between the speakers and participants to introduce the understanding of risk/hazard and vulnerability due to disasters; Faisal Fathani T., ST., MT., Ph.D. (UGM), Dr. Gegar Prasetya (GNS New Zealand), Prof.Dr. Kirbani Sri Brotopuspito (UGM) and Prof. Junun Sartohadi (Head of Center for Disaster Studies of UGM) delivered their presentations. Furthermore, this activity continued with a discussion about spatial analysis of potential disasters and disaster management action choices, presenting speakers: Prof. Drs. Koentjoro, Ph.D. (UGM), dr. Hendro Wartatmo, Sp. BD (UGM), Prof. Dr. Indra Bastian MBA., Akt. (UGM) and Prof. Dr. Iman Satyarno, ME., Ph.D. (UGM), while a discussion on the participation and contribution of institutions was presented by Prof.Ir. Bakti Setiawan, MA., Ph.D. (UGM).
The workshop on the second day was conducted in a field visit to the Museum of Mount Merapi, Sleman, Sengir, Klaten and Dome House. The third day was spent with activities to analyze and utilize spatial data in planning disaster risk reduction, using the Yogyakarta case.
According to Dr. Wisnu Nurchayo, Chairman of the Committee for Research Week 2010, that the workshop was fully supported by Chevron as a donor who has attention to the issue of disaster management. Participants consisted of elements of Universities in Indonesia, local governments, the Regional Disaster Management Agency, Department of Public Works, PRB Forum and the public. "As many as 200 participants attended the event. We hope this activity will form a network between universities and local governments in the field of disaster management, especially in disaster risk reduction planning in the regions by utilizing spatial data," Wisnu Nurcahyo explained.
