In accordance with the Statute of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), as stipulated in Government Regulation Number 67 of 2013 concerning the Statute of Universitas Gadjah Mada, the Board of Trustees consists of 19 members. These members include the Minister organizing the governmental affairs in the field of education, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono, the Rector; members of the public, represented by six public figures and two UGM alumni; and representatives from within UGM, comprising three professors, three non-professor lecturers, one non-teaching university staff representative, and one student representative.

Referring to the UGM Statute, the Board of Trustees is authorized to:
- Establish the Board of Trustees Regulations;
- Set general policies for UGM;
- Appoint and dismiss the Rector;
- Appoint and dismiss members of the Audit Committee;
- Appoint and dismiss honorary members of the Board of Trustees;
- Ratify norms and benchmarks for UGM’s operations;
- Approve the Strategic Plan as well as the Annual Work and Budget Plan;
- Approve the academic feasibility of proposals for opening, merging, and/or closing Faculties, Schools, or Study Programs;
- Exercise general oversight and control over UGM’s management;
- Approve the Campus Master Plan proposed by the Rector and the Academic Senate;
- Evaluate the Rector’s performance;
- Handle the final resolution of issues arising within UGM;
- Develop networks with institutions and/or individuals outside UGM;
- Conduct fundraising activities; and
- Together with the Rector, compile and submit the annual report to the Minister.
