The Academic Senate (hereafter referred to as the Indonesian acronym SA) is an organ of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) responsible for formulating policies, providing recommendations, and overseeing academic matters.

The duties of the SA, based on Government Regulation No. 67 of 2013 on UGM Statutes and the Board of Trustees Regulation No. 4 of 2013 on UGM Organizational Structure, are mentioned in the following list.

  • Provide input to the Minister regarding the evaluation of the Board of Trustees’ performance;
  • Formulate UGM policies in academic and scientific fields, including approving degrees and regulating the implementation of education, research, and community service;
  • Approve proposals for the appointment of Professors to the Rector;
  • Approve the establishment, merger, and/or closure of study centers;
  • Approve the academic feasibility of proposals for the establishment, merger, and/or closure of Faculties, Schools, Departments/Programs, or Programs of Study;
  • Provide recommendations on proposals for awarding honorary doctorates or other honorary titles to the Rector;
  • Provide recommendations on the dismissal of the Rector;
  • Formulate norms and benchmarks for UGM’s academic operations;
  • Evaluate the implementation of UGM’s research and community service policies annually;
  • Formulate UGM policies for assessing academic performance, skills, personal integrity of academic community members, and UGM employees;
  • Formulate policies on the implementation of academic freedom, academic ethics, and scholarly autonomy;
  • Conduct supervision and assessment of academic quality and integrity;
  • Formulate campus life regulations;
  • Assist the Board of Trustees in evaluating the Rector’s performance in education, research, and community service;
  • Work with the Rector to formulate the Campus Master Plan; and
  • Provide input to the Rector in the preparation of the Strategic Plan and the Annual Work and Budget Plan.
