Established on 1 September 1963, the Faculty of Geography at Gadjah Mada University is a pioneer in the development of geography in Indonesia. According to the QS World University Rankings (2025), the Faculty of Geography at UGM is currently ranked 111th globally, 23rd in Asia, 4th in ASEAN, and 1st nationally. All of the faculty’s programs have received national A/Excellent accreditation and international accreditation from ASIIN, affirming their globally recognized academic quality.
Graduates of the undergraduate programs at the Faculty of Geography are equipped with the competencies to serve as environmental and regional resource analysts, geospatial information analysts, and regional development analysts. The faculty plays an active role in advancing scientific knowledge and addressing strategic issues, including climate change mitigation and adaptation, sustainable regional development, remote sensing technology and its applications, geographic information systems, spatial decision support systems, geospatial artificial intelligence, disaster mitigation and management, nature-based solutions, carbon measurement and mapping, smart city development, regional spatial planning, regional governance, demography and population migration, and economic resources, all within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Career Prospects
Graduates of the Faculty of Geography at Gadjah Mada University have broad and strategic career prospects, both in the public and private sectors,
at national and international levels. In the public sector, alumni can pursue careers as researchers, lecturers or civil servants (ASN) in ministries, state agencies and government departments at provincial, city and district levels.
Graduates can also contribute to State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and Regionally-Owned Enterprises (ROEs), as teachers in the education sector, or in military institutions such as Dittopad, Dissurpotrud, and Pushidrosal. In the private sector, meanwhile, alumni can work as mapping and environmental consultants, start-up founders or entrepreneurs, researchers at independent research institutions, and professionals in the mining and banking industries, as well as national and multinational companies.
Additionally, graduates can play an active role in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) at national and international levels, thereby strengthening their contribution to sustainable development and global environmental governance.
