Universitas Gadjah Mada’s Faculty of Medicine, Pubic Health, and Nursing celebrates is 72nd anniversary by hosting community service events such as home renovation, cataract surgery, eye check, and health and nutrition consultation in Kulon Progo regency, collaborating with Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, UGM Hospital, and Dr. Soeradji Tirtonegoro General Hospital, supported by KAGAMADOK.
In a press conference at Joglo Alumni of the Faculty on Wednesday (28/2), event committee chairman, Prof. Dr. dr. Budi Yuli Setianto, Sp.PD(K), Sp.JP(K)., explained they would renovate six homes of the residents in Sentolo and Nanggulan districts while other events will be conducted at Nyi Ageng Serang Hospital on Sunday (4/3).
As many as 50 patients will receive cataract surgery and retinopathy detection, while 50 people with diabetes will receive health and nutrition consultation. There are further 200 school children to be given eye check and health and nutrition consultation, in addition to 100 geriatric patients to receive glaucoma detection as well as health and nutrition consultation.
Community service chairman of KAGAMADOK, Prof. dr. Suhardjo, SU, Sp.MK.,said glaucoma detection was very important because in Indonesia it was the second cause of blindness after cataract.
Vice-Dean of the Faculty, dr. Mei Neni Sitaresmi, Sp.AK., Ph.D., said, “The community service event is in line with the mission of the Faculty to improve public health.” She said sustainability and community independence becomes the goal of the event, so the community are encouraged to have active participation in building their own welfare.
“The principle of our community service programme is to collaborate with the community. We give the stimulant, but the community develops it together,” she added.
Previous events include social service, batik village development, book launching, gathering, and health checks for senior citizens. Further events include alumni gathering and seminars on violence prevention in youth.
