UGM is hosting the CIMPA Research School on Group Actions in Arithmetic and Geometry on 17-28 February 2020. Followed by 65 participants from various countries, this activity is a continuation of the SEAMS school held at UGM in 2015.

"This activity has a mission to advance research in the field of mathematics," said Thierry Mare, Attache for Science & Technology Cooperation of the Francais Institute of Indonesia when opening this event on Monday (17/2).

Topics that will be discussed in this school are finite fields, coding theory, covering spaces, representation theory, modular forms and Galois theory. Each class consists of 6 hours of lectures and 3 hours of training sessions to complete training and computing. This learning, according to Thierry, will be beneficial for the development of world science, including specifically for developing countries such as Indonesia.

The 65 participants who attended the CIMPA Research School, 25 of them were foreign students. Besides, this activity also involved guest lecturers from various leading universities in the world, such as Leiden Universiteit, Sorbonne Université, Université Blaise Pascal Clermont-Ferrand, and Università Roma Tre.

"This is a good opportunity to bring researchers together," he said.

This research school will help students gaining background to the relationship between symmetry in geometry, analysis and number theory. The concept of the group itself is very central to the whole of modern mathematics.

In number theory and geometry, where groups take central roles in various forms such as symmetry groups, Galois groups, fundamental groups, reflection groups and permutation groups, conceptual unification is clearly illustrated.

The International Center de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées (CIMPA) is a non-profit organization that promotes research in the field of mathematics in developing countries. Located in Nice, CIMPA is included in the UNESCO Category 2 center and has organized and supported various activities in developing countries throughout the world.

"Thank you UGM for supporting and hosting this event. I am very happy that CIMPA School can be held again in this city," said the representative of CIMPA, Lydia Hernandez.

Aside from being a learning tool for students, this event according to her has brought together mathematicians around the world. This becomes important because the development of the world today demands the need for highly skilled mathematicians.

She also advised the participants to make the best use of this opportunity to gain knowledge and build productive discussions to make real contributions.

"The movement of the world is getting faster so we must be ready to face it. Learn not only to increase your knowledge but how you can contribute to the development of your respective countries," she said.
