Epidemiolog UGM Paparkan Potensi Munculnya Varian Baru Virus Covid-19 di Indonesia

dr. Bayu Satria Wiratama, MPH., as a UGM Epidemiology Expert, had just revealed the potential of Covid-19 new variant to occur in Indonesia because massive transmission happened actively in some areas around Indonesia. This phenomenon can probably generate viruses to develop and mutate largely. In addition to that, the SARS COV-2 virus is a type of RNA virus-like influenza virus that mutates easily.

“A new variant of Covid-19 may potentially occur. Still, we have a small possibility to detect it,” he revealed on Tuesday (22/02).

This statement is supported by the condition where the activity of genomic surveillance for SARS COV-2 in Indonesia has not been optimal because there has still been a small number of activities on systematic and continuous genomics analysis of new virus variants.

“We only have 0,03 percent from our entire sample, so it’s still small,”

As the virus generates, it also adds the possibility of a more severe impact in Indonesia.

“The previous vaccine will not be efficient since the virus remains to mutate and the transmission is still going on,” he revealed. In order to prevent this severe impact, there should be affirmation in the implementation of 3T (testing, tracing, and treatment). Meanwhile, the community must discipline implementing 5M that refers to wearing a mask, keeping distance, washing hands, reducing mobility, and avoiding crowds.

“This virus mutation can be perhaps caused by weak implementation on 3T and 5M during this time. Therefore, we should strengthen it even more. Although the virus is mutating, we still have the same prevention using 3T and 5M,” he explained.
