Three UGM Information Technology students won first place in the 2021 UI/UX Competition held by CreateIn and Ahmad Dahlan University’s Information System Student Association. The Asian Games Mascot Team, as they named themselves, consists of Yusuf Helmy Hensyaputra, Dhimas Aji Suryakusuma, and Amannia Rachmadiva Oktaderina.
Before confirmed as champions, these students were required to pass two rounds of the competition, namely preliminary and final. In the preliminary round, Yusuf, Dhimas, and Amannia must submit a proposal about their case study no later than April 10. Together with other top 10 teams from Telkom Institute of Technology Purwokerto, Bina Nusantara University, Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, and Telkom University, they advanced to the final held online via Zoom on April 23, 2021. In this stage, all participants presented their work to the jury and submitted a demo video of the proposed app.
The UGM team invented an app called GERAK. It aims to help users to build a regular and fun exercise habit. The app has features that allow users to create a target and schedule for cycling, running, and workout. They can also record their sports activities and see the details. GERAK is also equipped with gamification to increase user engagement and motivation to continue exercising.
Team representative Helmi explained that this competition was a delightful opportunity for all of the members. They were happy to ace the competition despite facing several pandemic challenges, such as conducting online research away from each other without face-to-face communication. They hoped that the GERAK app would help many people build an exercise habit, especially in the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This is the first time we participated in a competition, and we thank God for the win. It gives us motivation and excitement to learn more about UI/UX and join various other competitions,” explained Helmi, Friday (7/5).
