We are delighted to inform you that our students, Resa Wardana Saputra (chemical engineering) and Vincentius Adven Brillian (mechanical engineering), won 1st place in the national paper competition Petroforia 2021.
The competition was held annually by IATMI SM STT Migas Balikpapan. It consisted of six categories: oil rig design competition, debate competition, smart competition, paper competition, futuristic ideas, and poster design competition. Before the winner announcement on June 6, paper participants were required to pass the abstract selection round on March 15 – April 28, write the complete papers on April 29 – May 31, and present their writings on June 5. In addition to our university, ten other universities across the country participated in the competition, such as Universitas Indonesia, Bandung Institute of Technology, etc.
The Atmos team (as Resa and Vincentius named themselves) proposed an innovation regarding waste heat recovery using direct inject-steam screw expander technology to create additional power generation. The team used waste heat coming out of the back-pressure turbines in Unit I and II of Ulumbu geothermal power plant, East Nusa Tenggara, for the analysis. They assessed that the temperature and pressure of the steam from the said turbines had the potential to be reused. Atmos concluded that the innovation was feasible both from thermodynamic and economic perspectives.
“We encountered problems when conducting the thermodynamic analysis. There were also some errors and data shortages during the economic analysis. Eventually, after several reviews, everything was in line with the objectives,” said Resa Wardana on Saturday (12/6).
Resa and Vincentius made a strong finish as the competition winners amid difficulties here and there. Hopefully, their idea can help increase the use of renewable energy and waste-to-energy for Indonesia’s energy security in the future.
