A team of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) students has been named poster contest winner at the 2022 International Oil and Gas Poster Competition (IOGPC) held by the Society of Petroleum Engineers – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Student Chapter. Apart from the Poster, the 2022 IOGPC also featured Software Workshop & Competition.
In the competition that took place from February to March 2022, team leader Sasa Aulia (Engineering Physics) paired up with fellow engineering students Enyca Aidina (Geological Engineering) and Khoirunnasi Rudin (Engineering Physics). They competed in the final round with another UGM team and six other groups from the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, and Diponegoro University.
Through a work entitled Integrated Nitrogen Fracturing-CO2 EOR (INFOR): A Promising Solution to Drive Attractive Oil and Gas Production Rates in Unconventional Liquid Reservoirs, Sasa and Co. propose innovation in oil and gas exploration aimed at increasing production and reducing the use of water. They also offer more lightweight proppant choices for use in unconventional liquid reservoirs.
According to Sasa, the ratio of conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon reserves is 2:8, resulting in a paradigm shift in finding and utilizing unconventional hydrocarbons and their resources for energy needs. In addition, since the commonly used hydraulic fracturing is not environmentally friendly and consumes a lot of water, Integrated Nitrogen Fracturing-CO2 EOR (INFOR) can serve as a promising alternative to help address this issue.
The team hopes this proposal can be thoroughly researched in the future and implemented in unconventional sources in Indonesia for increased oil and gas production.
