UGM students created an e-commerce platform Fi$hku to facilitate the buying and selling of fishery products among fishers, fish farmers, and consumers.
Nabila Apriliana, Nimatul Husna, and Rhamdan Syahrul (UGM Vocational School) were joined by colleagues from other universities, Adisti Anjani (Udayana University), Anugrah Tri Ramadhan (Dian Nuswantoro University), and Muthia Farah (UIN Jakarta).
According to Nabila, the fact that fish consumption in Indonesia is relatively low and Indonesian fishers live in poverty despite the country’s abundant fish potential and status as a maritime country has prompted the team to create this platform.
With Fi$hku, fishers and farmers can market and sell their catch to consumers at reasonable prices without third parties. In return, consumers can get fresh products directly from them.
“Fi$hku is a start-up that aims to improve the economy in the fisheries sector in Indonesia. This platform can detect the freshness of fish using machine learning in the android app,” said Nabila.
This platform has features like Consumer App, Seller App, and Freshness Detection. The Consumer App enables purchases by consumers such as fish traders, restaurants, hotels, and other players in the business sector.
The Seller App is a feature for fishermen and farmers to sell products, and the Freshness Detection is to detect the freshness level of fish based on the eyes, gills, and flesh.
Fi$hku was born through the 2022 Bangkit Academy, part of the Independent Study program held by the Ministry of Education and Culture. It picked up funding from the Directorate General of Higher Education and Google and made it into the Top 15 Best Capstone Project – Bangkit Academy (Google, Goto, Traveloka).
Nabila said that the team was committed to developing the platform further. They will add several features to expand consumer reach and distribution of fresh fish. They also seek to improve the ability of fishers and farmers to use technology.
“Hopefully, fish consumption in Indonesia can increase, and thus fishers can prosper,” she said.
