Another achievement was gained by UGM student at national level. This time, the achievement was made by Imam Bagus Nugroho from Faculty of Biology. Imam became the champion in Biology at National Sciences Olympiad of Indonesian Higher Education (OSN PTI). Meanwhile, the runner up was a student of School of Biological Sciences and Technology ITB and the third winner was a student of Faculty of Biology, University of Indonesia.
In the five-day competition from 1-5 November in Jakarta, Imam succeeded to beat 32 other finalists coming from several universities throughout Indonesia. According to Imam, before being selected to be the representative of the province, he had competed with 161 other participants. “Meanwhile, at the national level, I competed with 32 finalists, representatives of each province,” he explained recently.
Imam mentioned that at the national selection in quarter final, the participants had to do essays. In that stage, nine best participants were selected to present their paper themed Valution Estimation of Economic Loss Due to Montara Oil Spill in East Lesser Sundas.
Furthermore, three people were selected out of the nine participants to go to the grand final. “In the grand final, the competition was done through a debate in which each finalist took role as presenter, opponent and reviewer in turns and the theme presented at that time was drawn by the committee. Coincidentally, I got the Eco-friendly Residence theme, said Iman who was also the finalist winner at Tokyo Tech Indonesian Commitment Award (TICA) 2010.
OSN PTI is a competition held by PT Pertamina to test capability in sciences for university students, both from state and private universities in all 33 Indonesian provinces. The competition was done in several stages at province and national levels.
