The Faculty of Animal Science at Universitas Gadjah Mada (Animal Science UGM) organized a Training and Competency Test for Halal Butchers (Juleha). The three-day training, held from May 1–3, 2025, was attended by 44 participants from various regions.
Dr. Endy Triyannanto, Head of UGM’s Halal Butchers Program, stated that the Juleha Training and Competency Certification Program was officially opened on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at Fapet UGM.
A total of 44 participants took part in a series of activities, ranging from pre-tests to in-depth competency sessions.
“This activity serves as a platform for training, competency testing, and certification renewal for halal butchers (surveillance). We are pleased with the strong enthusiasm from participants across regions,” he said on Friday, May 2, 2025.
Dr. Cuk Tri Noviandi added that participants received material covering various essential competencies for halal butchers during the training.
These include competencies in applying Islamic law (Sharia), coordinating work, implementing occupational health and safety, hygiene and sanitation, conducting physical inspections of animals, assessing animal readiness for slaughter, evaluating the appropriateness of the slaughtering process, and determining the animal’s death status.
“We also carried out competency assessments that included written tests, interviews, and practical evaluations,” he added.
Dean of Animal Science UGM, Professor Budi Guntoro, expressed hope that this activity could improve the competence of halal butchers across regions.
According to Professor Guntoro, ensuring the halal status of a food product of animal origin starts with the butcher, not only during the slaughtering process but also throughout the handling and traceability of the slaughtered product.
“Therefore, it is hoped that this training will equip participants with comprehensive knowledge and skills,” he stated.
