At its 70th Anniversary, the Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (Biology UGM), reaffirmed its commitment to advancing biology as the foundation for innovation, conservation, and ecosystem sustainability.
Biology UGM has been recognized as a Center of Excellence in Tropical Biology at both national and international levels. All of its study programs have earned “Excellent” accreditation from the Independent Accreditation Institute for Natural Sciences and Formal Sciences (LAMSAMA) and international accreditation from ASIIN for both undergraduate and master’s programs.
“The year 2025 marks a historic milestone for the doctoral program of the Faculty of Biology, which welcomed 38 new students, the highest number in the faculty’s history,” said Dean of Biology UGM, Professor Budi Setiadi Daryono, in his report at the peak celebration of the faculty’s 70th Anniversary on Thursday (Sep. 18).
Indonesia’s Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Professor Brian Yuliarto, highlighted the faculty’s critical role in shaping an outstanding younger generation and fostering agents of change within society.
“Students and alumni of Biology UGM must continue to serve as agents of change who contribute meaningfully to the environment and society,” the Minister conveyed in a video message.
Through the “Diktisaintek Berdampak” program, Professor Yuliarto affirmed his ministry’s commitment to supporting Biology UGM in strengthening research, innovation, and downstream applications that provide tangible benefits for communities, industries, and government institutions.
UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia also expressed appreciation for the achievements of the faculty’s lecturers and researchers, noting that the faculty ranks at the top in terms of publication output within UGM.
She encouraged the faculty to continue serving as pioneers and guardians of biodiversity.
Professor Emilia further emphasized that the 14th lustrum celebration of Biology UGM provides an important moment for reflection on the ethical responsibility of knowledge in contributing to ecosystems that enhance environmental well-being and human dignity.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, the faculty signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of the Special Region of Yogyakarta and another with St. Augustine Hippo Catholic University.
Both agreements aim to strengthen cooperation in education, research, and community service.
The event also featured the harvesting of Supersemar longan fruit, developed by one of the faculty’s researchers.
