Gigih Indah Sukma Halwati (17) could not stop expressing her gratitude when she was accepted into the Physics program at the UGM Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA UGM).
She became the only MAN 1 East Lombok student this year to be accepted into UGM through the academic excellence-based entrance selection (SNBP) pathway.
“I was nervous, cried, happy, all mixed. I still can’t believe I got accepted into UGM through SNBP. In my school, it’s rare for someone to pass SNBP,” she said emotionally when met at her home in Tirtanadi Village, Labuhan Haji District, East Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara.
From a young age, Gigih showed determination and perseverance in pursuing education. She participated in various competitions to fulfill her dream of studying at UGM. As a result, Gigih achieved numerous accolades, including silver and bronze medals in physics olympiads and first place in a provincial-level science innovation competition.
The third child of four siblings has always loved studying physics. She actively participated in the physics study club at her school, where she discussed olympiad problems and created innovative tools. Despite the challenges, she found joy and motivation in solving physics problems.
Support from Her Father
Gigih is grateful for the constant support from her father, Muhidin (59), who has always encouraged her to pursue her dreams. Muhidin never pressured Gigih to be the top student; for him, the most important thing was that Gigih studied diligently and had good character.
“As a parent, I always provide motivation, never disputing her views or opinions. If Gigih’s ambitions are good for her life now and hereafter, I pray that God grants them. If studying at UGM is good for her future, the family fully supports it,” Muhidin said.
It has been difficult for Muhidin to play father and mother roles since his wife, Purnawati, passed away in 2019. Her sudden passing was a heavy test for him and their four children. Initially, he struggled to adjust to the dual responsibilities, especially since the youngest child had developmental delays.
Previously, Muhidin’s late wife managed a household goods store in front of their house, which provided for their daily needs. However, since no one was as skilled in trading as his wife, the store has remained unattended. Muhidin no longer restocks items to sell.
Muhidin works as a contract teacher. A graduate of Agriculture from Mataram University in 1990, he only found employment two years after graduation. Fortunately, a friend offered him a position as a mathematics teacher at MAS NW Korleko. Since then, Muhidin has dedicated himself to teaching.
“I also once worked as a migrant worker in Malaysia, but only for a year. After that, I returned to teaching,” he recalled.
For over 30 years, Muhidin has taught and encountered various student behaviors. He and his colleagues sometimes would cry over challenging students in the teachers’ room. Despite this, he always prays that the knowledge he imparts benefits them.
With an income of 2,000,000 rupiahs a month, Muhidin must be resourceful to meet his family’s needs. In December, he will no longer receive certification allowances due to retirement. Although he is still allowed to teach, his income will drastically decrease to a monthly salary of 500,000 rupiahs.
“To supplement, after teaching, I also cut grass for cow feed,” Muhidin said.
Despite his modest income as a teacher, Muhidin always strives to fulfill Gigih’s needs. When Gigih expressed her desire to study at UGM, Muhidin initially felt hesitant and worried about letting her study more than 800 kilometers away. Moreover, the cost of sending Gigih to study abroad is substantial.
Joyful news arrived when Gigih was declared to receive a 100% UKT subsidy from UGM. She and her father were shocked, leading Gigih to check the screen several times. Muhidin also checked Gigih’s Simaster screen and confirmed that her studies at UGM would be free until graduation. Now, they are waiting for the announcement of the KIP-Kuliah scholarship.
“I feel very helped by the UKT subsidy, especially in such difficult economic times,” he said gratefully, praying that Gigih can make the most of the subsidy.
As Gigih prepares to depart for Yogyakarta, Muhidin continuously offers advice. He reminds Gigih to maintain proper conduct and behavior in the new environment and make the most of the subsidy received. He also emphasizes the importance of consistently performing the five daily prayers.
“Once you are in Yogyakarta, take good care of yourself. Be mindful of what you say; it can be harmful if spoken wrongly. Speak gently, be patient, and never forget your prayers,” he advised.
