One of the biggest challenges for graduates after leaving university is deciding on their next steps. Navigating economic instability and a lack of job opportunities can be significant obstacles to starting a career.
Therefore, it is crucial to continuously develop personal competencies and strong leadership qualities to succeed in the professional world.
This was expressed by Haerudin, Head of the Central Java Provincial Agency for National Unity and Politics, who delivered a talk on leadership and the role of the UGM Alumni Family (Kagama) at the pre-graduation briefing for prospective UGM graduates from the Undergraduate and Applied Bachelor programs for the second period of the 2024/2025 academic year.
The event was held on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2025, at Grha Sabha Pramana, and 1,408 students preparing to officially become UGM alumni attended.
Haerudin, who is also an alumnus of the UGM Faculty of Law (FH UGM), emphasized that graduates must continuously sharpen their personal competencies and leadership abilities.
These two aspects are essential for launching a career and providing direction and purpose in life.
“At the very least, you need to have a sense of leadership. It’s not just about leading a team, but more importantly, leading yourself,” Haerudin said.
He shared his personal experience of taking the Civil Servant Candidate (CPNS) exam.
At the time, he lacked the funds to even register, but through determination and strong self-confidence, he successfully became a civil servant without spending any money. This story remains a source of inspiration and motivation for him.
Haerudin also stressed the importance of remembering the first steps taken. He advised UGM alumni to reflect on why they initially chose UGM as their university. All major decisions should be made with personal conviction. This habit will foster leadership by instilling a sense of purpose.
“As UGM alumni, you already have an advantage. UGM’s name is well-known everywhere. Therefore, as alumni, you must continue to enhance that reputation by contributing to the nation,” said Haerudin.
Furthermore, Haerudin revealed some recent facts about the CPNS exam, noting that the average score for the Pancasila test in the Basic Competency Selection (SKD) has not reached a passing grade in recent years.
He believed this reflects the need to reinforce the Pancasila ideology among the younger generation. Ideology is the foundation of the nation’s life and a guide for contributing to it. He reminded the graduates that their duty as alumni is to continue innovating and contributing to the country.
“So that the positive impact of UGM alumni continues for future generations,” he said.
The Undergraduate and Applied Bachelor graduation ceremony will occur on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2025, at Grha Sabha Pramana, UGM.
These briefings are held every graduation period to equip UGM students before joining Kagama and beginning their careers.
