In their first year of university, new students are often eager to engage in various non-academic activities to pursue their interests and talents. One of the best ways to do this is by joining a student activity unit (UKM).
Did you know that Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) offers 55 UKMs? With so many options spread across four shared secretariats, it can be overwhelming for students to choose.
Various communities also provide opportunities for students to explore their interests and develop their skills.
Susetyo Hario Putero, the advisor for UGM’s UKM Forum, emphasized the importance of introducing UKMs to students.
“In this era, we can’t rely solely on classroom education,” he stated in a press release sent to reporters on Tuesday (Aug. 20).
Putero added that while UGM students gain extensive knowledge and insights during their lectures, they also need a wide range of supporting skills to succeed professionally.
“The job market demands numerous soft skills, organizational abilities, and networking capabilities,” he explained.
To help new students select the UKM that best matches their interests and talents, UGM is hosting Gelanggang Expo UGM (GELEX) from Aug. 21 to 23 at the UGM Pancasila Field.
Under the theme Brilliant Expression of Gelanggang, GELEX 2024 will bring a fantasy world to life through a short series, expo decorations, and interactive booths from 55 UKMs and 20 communities.
GELEX will also feature collaborations with arts secretariats and guest stars to liven up the event. Food stands, photo booths, fun games, and other surprises will be available for attendees.
As an annual event, Gelanggang Expo UGM introduces UKMs and communities at UGM to students, especially new ones.
Over three days, attendees can explore all the UKM and community booths and learn more about the various opportunities available.
GELEX also serves as a platform for UKM membership registration, allowing students to develop their interests and talents.
