Universitas Gadjah Mada offers 29 international undergraduate programs (IUP), eight in the social sciences and humanities.
These eight international programs include Accounting, Management, and Economics. Additionally, there are IUP in International Relations, Public Policy and Management, and Communication Studies, followed by IUP in Psychology and IUP in Law.
In a recent UGM Update live broadcast, the managers of the international programs from the social sciences and humanities faculties introduced the strengths, career prospects, and opportunities offered by UGM’s IUP.
Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs of UGM Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UGM), Dr. Bayu Sutikno, explained that international programs at FEB UGM have been in place since 2007, offering three study programs: Accounting, Economics, and Management.
One of this program’s key strengths is its international accreditation and partnerships with more than 70 universities in Europe, Asia, and Australia.
“We offer double degree schemes, student exchanges, and academic exposure such as summer and winter courses,” said Dr. Sutikno on Saturday (Feb. 8).
He added that all courses are in English, and IUP students will have wider opportunities to earn double degrees with partner universities such as the University of Melbourne, Erasmus University, and the University of Groningen.
Dr. Ardian Indro Yuwono, head of the IUP in Communication Studies, stated that international programs in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol UGM), particularly Communication Studies, were relatively newly established in 2019.
The IUP in International Relations was founded in early 2010, while the IUP in Public Policy and Management was introduced in 2013.
Despite this, IUP in Communication Studies has received international accreditation and benefits from instructors who are both academics and media practitioners.
One distinctive feature of the program is the requirement for a student exchange in the third year. The program also offers double degree opportunities with Flinders University and Queen Mary University.
“International exposure is a key component of graduation requirements, where students must participate in a student exchange or study abroad program,” explained Dr. Yuwono.
Dr. Elga Andriana, the IUP in Psychology manager, explained that since its establishment in 2016, the IUP in Psychology has only opened one class with 40 students per cohort.
The program’s advantage lies in its double degree program with the University of Leeds and student exchange opportunities with the University of Groningen.
The program also hosts international guest lecturers each semester and welcomes foreign students from the Netherlands, Germany, and Australia.
“We also emphasize field schools that allow students to observe the practical application of psychology directly,” said Dr. Andriana.
Meanwhile, Dr. Wahyu Yun Santoso, manager of the IUP in the Faculty of Law (FH UGM), stated that since its launch in 2013, the IUP in Law has offered double degree opportunities with partner universities such as Maastricht University and the University of Groningen.
This year, FH UGM introduced a new 3+1 scheme, in collaboration with Durham University, that allows students to earn double and LLM degrees in a shorter time.
“Our students are also required to complete two internships, and many of our alumni have gone on to successful careers at international law firms,” added Dr. Santoso.
With its numerous strengths and international opportunities, UGM’s international programs have become attractive to prospective students seeking a global educational experience.
