UGM Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) conducted surgical treatment for cleft lips and palates and orthodontic and pediatric dental care for 40 children in East Kalimantan held from July 20-22, 2023, at IA Moeis Regional Hospital.
This event was made possible by collaboration between the faculty and Senyum Harapan Nusantara Foundation, Dental Alums Family (KAKGIGAMA), alums from various fields of study and regions, Amil Zakat National Agency of East Kalimantan, Indonesian Dental Association of East Kalimantan, and IA Moeis Regional Hospital.
The dean of the faculty, Dr. Suryono, said many children in Indonesia are still born with cleft lips and palates. Out of a thousand births, approximately one baby is recorded to have cleft lips and palates, and this condition has become a concern for dental alums of the UGM Faculty of Dentistry.
He explained that in the concept of the Academic Health System (AHS), UGM is responsible for fostering improvements in the health status of the community in Kalimantan. Technology transfer and knowledge dissemination to local healthcare workers will likely occur by deploying expert lecturers in their respective fields.
“Cleft lips and palates are not merely clinical issues resolved in hospitals. Education and guidance for parents, prospective parents, and the community are essential so children can grow optimally in a conducive environment,” he said on Monday (24/7).
It is hoped that next year UGM can send students for continuous communication, information, and education as part of prevention for cleft lips and palates. This program is not limited to health sciences, as it is expected to involve those engaging in psychology, sociology, and economics to empower the community.
“Therefore, with regard to building a good healthcare system that aims to improve the quality of life for the people of East Kalimantan, support and contributions from various parties are highly anticipated,” he added.
The Chair of KAKGIGAMA, Dr. Endro Sucahyono, expressed appreciation for the solidarity of KAKGIGAMA in Kalimantan. He praised their wholehearted support and assistance in facilitating this comprehensive and integrated program.
“It is hoped that this comprehensive and integrated care concept can serve as a model that can be applied to various regions in Indonesia, especially to prevent childhood stunting and give birth to an outstanding and confident Indonesian youth,” he said.
