Mars Ega Legowo Putra, Regional Marketing Director of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga and a member of the UGM Alumni Family (Kagama), briefed 1,423 prospective graduates at Grha Sabha Pramana on Tuesday (May 21).
In front of the prospective graduates, Mars Putra stated that competition in the job market is both a challenge and a motivation. He shared his experience of frequently participating in try-out programs held by various companies, which eventually led to job offers even before he graduated.
“I want to say that you can get a head start to enrich your work experience,” he said.
He says competence and skills are key assessment criteria for every HR department. Putra shared five important criteria companies look for in an employee: personality, motivation, basic competence, energy, and reputation.
“Besides looking for a character that fits the desired position, it’s also important to understand the candidate’s motivation, such as the contributions they want to make, the basic competencies they possess, the energy to execute tasks, and the ability to maintain a good reputation,” he explained.
Putra also introduced the concept of Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity (VUCA), which can be used to adapt to rapidly changing and unpredictable business environments.
He emphasized the importance of having more adaptive and responsive strategies to face unstable and rapidly changing environments. He advised prospective graduates to prepare a mission statement when applying for jobs.
“This could include contributions, prioritizing obligations over rights, sustainability to ensure that our contributions create a sustainable company, as well as nationalism and development,” he said.
Achmad Charris Zubair, Chair of Kagama of Philosophy UGM, who also attended the briefing, said that the bachelor’s degree is part of the relay of life to be able to serve society, the nation, and the state.
“It should be remembered that becoming a graduate is not the endpoint but an important point in our lives. Because tomorrow, that degree must be proven with real actions in the wider community,” he stated.
