Former Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) (1998-2002), Professor Ichlasul Amal, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024, at the age of 82 at RSPI Jakarta.
Professor Mohtar Mas’oed, a UGM Professor of International Relations at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol UGM), shared this news.
“Professor Ichlasul Amal, the former Rector of UGM, passed away this morning at 2:40 at RSPI, Jakarta,” Professor Mas’oed announced Thursday (Nov. 14).
The body will be brought to Yogyakarta for burial at the Sawitsari cemetery on Thursday (Nov. 14). Before the burial, it will lie in state at the Balairung of UGM’s Central Office after 2:00 PM for a final tribute and farewell from the UGM community.
“(The burial will be) after 2:00 PM, as the body is currently en route from Jakarta,” stated the Dean of Fisipol UGM, Dr. Wawan Mas’udi.
Professor Amal was known as a dedicated figure in education, particularly in advancing UGM as a leading university. During his term as rector, students regarded him as a warm and approachable leader.
Additionally, he was a notable supporter of the student movement during the 1998 Reformasi period. UGM archives document a historic moment where he and Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X joined thousands of students in delivering speeches in front of Grha Sabha Pramana.
UGM’s current rector, Professor Ova Emilia, expressed deep sorrow over Professor Ichlasul Amal’s passing. Professor Emilia said his term as rector contributed significantly to the university’s progress, including enhancing educational quality and strengthening UGM’s international networks.
“The entire UGM community deeply mourns his passing. May he rest in the best place by His side, and may his family be granted strength and patience in this time of loss,” stated Professor Ova Emilia.
