Digital transformation has become a necessity not only for large-scale businesses but also for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Recognizing this challenge, a group of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) students participating in the Community Service Program (KKN-PPM) Berbah Bertuah Unit launched a flagship program titled “Advancing MSMEs through Digitalization” in Sendangtirto and Kalitirto Villages, Berbah District, Sleman.
Through mentoring and community engagement activities, the students successfully involved more than 30 MSME actors across four hamlets: Gandu, Tampungan, Kaliajir Kidul, and Berbah Kali. The students were not merely present but actively assisted the business owners in adopting digital practices.
The support included social media branding, website creation and training, registration on digital platforms, production of promotional banners, and the provision of QRIS for cashless transactions.
“We facilitated and mentored business owners in Berbah so they can compete in the online market. Based on our survey, many MSMEs here have great potential but lack knowledge of digital marketing. Education and digital mentoring became the solutions we offered,” explained team leader Hanifam Rezki on Thursday (Aug. 14).
The initiative received positive responses from local residents, including Esti, owner of Warung Bubur dan Ramesan Bu Esti. She said the program has been beneficial in promoting her products.
“Previously, I only marketed through WhatsApp to nearby residents. After being registered with online partners and provided with QRIS, I hope my business can reach a wider audience and attract more customers,” she said.
During program implementation, the students collaborated with village officials, youth organizations, and local MSME actors. They also conducted regular visits to the entrepreneurs’ homes to ensure continuous mentoring.
The success of this program demonstrates that UGM’s community service activities go beyond academic exercises, bringing tangible impacts on community empowerment.
“We hope the synergy we build can drive change, particularly in helping MSMEs grow in the digital era,” added Rezki.
