The annual event, Gelanggang Expo (Gelex), hosted by UGM and supported directly by the UGM Directorate of Student Affairs, is back with the theme “Symphony of Gelanggang’s Euphoria.”
Through #UGMUpdate, the Organizing Committee’s Chair revealed the theme’s meaning and the lineup of events on Tuesday, August 15. Gelanggang Expo is a well-known event that aims to promote various Student Activity Units at UGM, especially for incoming students.
“This year’s event is divided into the pre-event and main event. For the pre-event, you can find information on our social media platforms, YouTube, Instagram, and website. The main event will feature performances and exhibitions filled with excitement and joy,” said Rafael Reinhart, the Chair of the 2023 Gelanggang Expo.
“The exhibition will last three days, featuring collaboration among 50 units. However, the main attractions will vary on each day. On the first day, there will be a sports stage, with speeches from representatives of sports units. Then, ten art units will present a joint performance on the second day. Finally, the third day will feature a guest star performance and the closing ceremony.”
According to him, the concept of Gelex this year is designed to provide entertainment and games, creating a refreshing atmosphere.
He also emphasized that the exhibition will allow visitors to interact directly with various UGM Student Activity Units. Apart from being a promotional platform for these units, Gelex also helps new students choose the interests and talents they want to develop during their studies at the university.
Although this event targets new students, Gelex is open to all UGM students and the university community.
The Student Organizations and Activities Coordinator at the Directorate of Student Affairs, Mugiyarto, explained the importance of introducing the units to new students.
“In today’s era, we cannot rely solely on classroom education. The job market requires many soft skills that are sometimes unrelated to one’s major. Therefore, students must participate in activities outside classes, including joining Student Activity Units. Gelex is a suitable platform to introduce new students to these opportunities,” said Mugiyarto.
“Remember, don’t just sign up because everyone else is doing it, especially if you don’t have a goal or the required skills. Joining a student unit should be about seizing the opportunity to learn soft skills. We hope students can express themselves freely and channel their talents and interests,” added Mugiyarto.
The 2023 Gelex will occur at the Pancasila Field of UGM and broadcast via the Gelanggang Expo UGM YouTube channel. Throughout the three days, visitors will be treated to captivating performances and a guest star whose identity remains a secret until the event.
