Three hundred participants took part in a joint fishing competition with local residents around the UGM campus on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2024, at UGM’s Wisdom Park. The competition, held to celebrate UGM’s 75th anniversary, involved the release of 8 quintals of catfish and tilapia for the 3-hour-long event.
Dr. Rustamaji, Director of UGM’s Directorate of Community Service (DPKM UGM), said that the purpose of the joint fishing event was to foster closer relationships between the university community and residents.
Although the joint fishing event is held only once a year, it serves as a platform for mutual acquaintance and environmental care.
“We really want to build a connection between UGM’s academic community and the surrounding residents. With the theme of guyub rukun (unity and harmony), we hope to strengthen our relationship with the local community in jointly preserving the environment,” he said.
Bahari Suharto, the chairman of the joint fishing committee, explained that the competition attracted 300 participants from UGM’s academic community and local residents.
Each participant was only allowed to use one fishing rod in this competition.
“Each rod could be equipped with a maximum of one hook, and the competition involved tilapia and catfish,” he explained.
Suharto said that two quintals of tilapia and six quintals of catfish were released into Wisdom Park a day before the competition.
At the end of the competition, three participants were selected based on the heaviest total weight of fish caught.
The first-place winner was Sukirman, a resident of Pogung, with a total fish weight of 12.2 kilograms, followed by Deny Rianto, a staff member from UGM’s Faculty of Pharmacy, with 8.6 kilograms. Third place went to Wahyudi, a resident of Godean, who weighed 8.5 kilograms.
