UGM students from Gamantaray Team won first place in the Competition of Maritime Education and Training (COMET) 6.0, organized by the Surabaya State Shipbuilding Polytechnic (PPNS) from May 2 to 4, 2025.
Gamantaray secured the top position after a tight competition with leading teams from various universities.
The team consists of Aldino Diru Sasongko (Mechanical Engineering Technology), Haikal Ahmad Siregar (Mechanical Engineering), and Azriel Febrian Devara (Mechanical Engineering).
In the competition, UGM’s Gamantaray Team developed the Jayamahe Boat, a high-speed vessel focused on student-driven maritime technology innovation and testing.
Team leader Aldino Diru Sasongko explained that their victory was driven by the strengths of the Jayamahe Boat.
The vessel stood out for its speed, endurance, and maneuverability. “These are some of the boat’s strengths, especially its ability to maneuver through the challenging course prepared by the committee,” Sasongko said at the UGM Faculty of Engineering (FT UGM) on Wednesday (Apr. 7).
Sasongko expressed gratitude for the team’s strong cohesion during COMET this year.
Despite coming from different engineering backgrounds, the three members complemented each other in areas such as mechanics, control systems, and performance testing.
“This synergy, I believe, was the foundation for designing and refining Jayamahe’s performance to a competitive level,” he explained.
Beyond technical aspects, team cohesion and a deep understanding of the vehicle’s characteristics were crucial to Gamantaray’s success in securing the top spot.
The challenges faced during preparation and competition only strengthened their unity.
“At COMET, our skills and teamwork were truly put to the test. This victory proves that dedication and a continuous passion for learning always yield rewarding results,” said Sasongko.
According to Muhammad Dafi Radian, Head of Gamantaray UGM, the team’s success at COMET 6.0 is not just about bringing home a trophy, but a step forward in promoting research and exploration in maritime technology.
The achievement also demonstrates that a team with members from diverse academic programs can compete effectively in an event dominated by vocational maritime and shipbuilding institutions.
“This is a great start for Gamantaray in the new year. Winning at COMET gives us a huge boost as we prepare for future competitions, especially the Indonesian Ship Contest. We hope to carry this spirit and hard work into our next achievements,” said Radian.
