Organizational sustainability has become a crucial issue amid dynamic changes in both the public and private sectors. Future-oriented governance is fundamental to maintaining an organization’s relevance to society.
Among the key factors supporting sustainable governance are firm regulations and performance-based management.
This topic emerged during the “Future Leadership Strategies” workshop on Thursday (Sep. 19) at the Multimedia Room, UGM Central Office.
UGM Bureau of Strategic Management organized the workshop as part of the Sustainable Future Leader Series program. It featured two speakers: Amien Sunaryadi, President Commissioner of PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk, and Professor Danang Parikesit, a professor at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada.
Amien Sunaryadi highlighted the underutilization of Indonesia’s skilled workforce due to ineffective leadership. Despite having many competent workers, organizations often lack leaders willing to make bold strategic decisions or demonstrate strong leadership skills.
“Developing a competitive culture alongside quality leadership, particularly among the younger generation, is essential for fostering innovation and ensuring organizational sustainability,” he stated.
He explained that governance based on accountability, transparency, responsibility, independence, and fairness is also critical for organizational sustainability. Financial transparency and strict adherence to a code of conduct should be prioritized.
“Academics can contribute by providing recommendations for governance and evaluating educational curricula to strengthen regulatory understanding,” he added.
Meanwhile, Professor Danang Parikesit agreed that future-oriented governance is key to organizational sustainability, especially in higher education institutions.
According to him, one of the main challenges in university management is the complexity of leadership and organizational structures, which differ from government institutions where roles and hierarchies are more clearly defined.
As a value-driven and mission-driven university, Professor Parikesit emphasized that UGM should strengthen its regulations while fostering collaboration with other organizations to enhance oversight and risk management.
Additionally, organizational structures can be redesigned to be more flexible, fostering innovation and creative thinking while maintaining a clear strategic direction.
