Brian Arianto Tanuwidjaja is recognized as one of the outstanding students from the Undergraduate Program in Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FK-KMK UGM). His name gained national attention after participating in Clash of Champions, a competition initiated by Ruangguru that brought together 40 students from top universities across Indonesia.
Tanuwidjaja was among the 1,408 undergraduate and applied bachelor’s degree graduates conferred at the graduation ceremony held on Wednesday (May 27) at Grha Sabha Pramana. The Magelang native officially earned his Bachelor of Medicine degree and graduated cum laude with a GPA of 3.53, completing his studies in just 3.5 years.
Tanuwidjaja expressed his gratitude for being able to complete his studies in a program he had dreamed of since childhood. He recalled how his interest in medicine began with a habit of treating his injured friends by applying antiseptic solutions.
“Back in elementary school, I helped a friend who had fallen and gotten injured. It was very simple; I just applied some antiseptic, but it felt incredibly rewarding,” said Tanuwidjaja.
His passion for medicine was also inspired by his parents, both of whom are doctors. He regards them as role models for their noble work, viewing the medical profession as a way to extend God’s hand in helping patients.
“I consider being a doctor a calling,” he said.
Over the past 3.5 years, Tanuwidjaja has experienced much during his time on the Bulaksumur campus. He not only pursued academic excellence but was also active in various student organizations and committees.
He was fortunate to qualify for the 37th National Student Scientific Week (PIMNAS), held at Universitas Airlangga in October last year.
He also won third place in the 2024 National Outstanding Student Selection, organized by the Indonesian Medical Students’ Senate Association (ISMKI), and second place in the 2022 National Medical English Debate Competition. Additionally, he secured multiple awards in various national and international debate competitions.
Despite these achievements, his journey was not without setbacks. One of the lowest points, he said, was when he attempted to enroll in a fast-track master’s program while simultaneously applying for the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA). After undergoing a series of preparatory tests, he ultimately did not pass the selection for the program.
“I gave it my all, my energy, my finances, but God said no. The hardest part was coming to terms with that and accepting that my path didn’t have to include IISMA. In time, I realized this may have been the best outcome for me. I believe everyone has their fortune and journey. We can try our best, but God decides the outcome,” he affirmed.
Tanuwidjaja is grateful for his time at UGM, noting that the university provided comprehensive facilities and support, including incentives for students participating in competitions. He expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to study at UGM and for the support he received throughout his studies. He also hoped that UGM would continue to grow and improve.
Widely known for his appearance on a game show, Tanuwidjaja also offered advice to fellow students to prioritize their health, particularly their mental well-being. He emphasized the importance of maintaining mental well-being and avoiding toxic productivity.
“UGM is a competitive environment, but rest is essential. Just focus on your path without comparing yourself to others. Being a student is a privilege, especially being a UGM student,” he noted.
Tanuwidjaja plans to continue his education in the Master of Public Health program at FK-KMK UGM. He is committed to enhancing access to quality healthcare for underserved communities.
“I also hope more people will become aware of the importance of health and begin to change their behavior and lifestyle as preventive measures,” he said.
