The UGM Faculty of Philosophy organized a series of events to celebrate its 56th anniversary.
As one of the faculties focusing on the study of morality, the interpretation of knowledge, and values, the Faculty of Philosophy presents a profound interpretation of the establishment of the faculty as the theme for its anniversary celebration this year.
Wayang kulit (shadow puppetry) was chosen as one of the events to convey meanings through its puppetry stories.
“Besides a ceremonial celebration, we hope this anniversary celebration serves as a moment for us at the Faculty of Philosophy to unite and share ideas. This is a platform where thoughts can converge and be manifested in concrete actions that benefit many people,” said the faculty’s Anniversary Celebration Coordinator, M. Rodinal Khair Khasri.
The concept of this year’s celebration was designed to reinforce the commitment to play the role of an educational institution that promotes the democratization of knowledge and becomes a pioneer in enhancing inclusion in education.
The “Semar Boyong” performance on Friday (August 18) featured Dalang (puppeteer) Air Marshal (Ret) Ki Bambang Soelistyo from the National Secretariat of Indonesian Wayang (SENAWANGI).
Senawangi is an organization dedicated to preserving and developing wayang, established in 1975.
“Senawangi has a close relationship with the Faculty of Philosophy. Perhaps since 2000, we have had a long history of collaborating, especially when we started working on a philosophy of wayang book. So, we conducted joint research,” stated the Chair of the Advisory Board of Senawangi, Sri Teddy Rusdy.
Semar Boyong narrates the struggle of three kingdoms plagued by a disease. They are said to be saved if they bring Semar, a figure from Javanese mythology, to their respective kingdoms.
In addition to portraying the struggle and efforts for salvation, the story also signifies cooperation and unity among the kingdoms.
In line with the long journey of the Faculty of Philosophy, integration and harmonization with various parties are needed to realize the aspirations of Indonesian education.
“Hopefully, by frequently hearing and seeing wayang performances, we can derive the values in this art form. We all believe that the values of wayang reflect our actual life values,” said the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, Dr. Rr. Siti Murtiningsih.
