Professor Achmad Munawar of the UGM Faculty of Engineering passed away on Friday, October 27, at 13:30 WIB, at the age of 70.
The entire UGM community, especially the Faculty of Engineering, deeply mourns the loss of Professor Munawar. He leaves behind not only memories but also a legacy of significant contributions in the academic field and beyond.
The final respects for the late professor were held on the same day at 18:00 at UGM.
“On behalf of the family, we thank all relatives and colleagues who accompanied him throughout his life. We also ask for forgiveness if there was anything unpleasant,” said a representative of Professor Munawar’s family.
He leaves behind his wife and two sons and daughters. Known for his friendly, firm, and supportive personality, he provided various scholarly contributions to his colleagues.
His departure is accompanied by deep sorrow and mourning as his remains were taken to the UGM Sawit Sari cemetery.
Professor Munawar joined the Faculty of Engineering as a lecturer in 1981. During his 40-year tenure, he produced many innovative works, especially in transportation.
“His works have significantly contributed to the Faculty of Engineering and Indonesia. He contributed to transportation development in Jakarta and Kalimantan and assisted the central government,” said Professor Selo, the Dean of the UGM Faculty of Engineering.
“Professor Munawar also received awards, one of which was for 25 years of dedication to UGM. The Faculty of Engineering expresses deep condolences on his passing.”
Many of Professor Munawar’s published journal works were focused on transportation. One involved researching the connectivity of tourist transportation infrastructure in Mandalika and Labuan Bajo.
In his work, Professor Munawar recommended to the government that increased accessibility enhance local tourism. To date, approximately 40 journals and 12 studies have been released.
All these innovations have played a significant role in developing transportation and infrastructure, both nationally and internationally.
“While being part of the UGM family, Professor Munawar was known as a friendly and patient person, thus providing comfort to his environment. He diligently pursued his field of expertise, transportation,” said Dr. Arief Setiawan Budi Nugroho, the Vice-Rector for Planning, Assets, and Information Systems.
“The late professor was appointed as a full professor on February 7, 2007, 16 years ago, and delivered an inaugural lecture titled Sustainable Transportation Development.”
Professor Munawar’s lecture upon being appointed as a professor highlighted the privatization of the transportation sector and the push to prioritize public interests.
Professor Munawar’s dedication to the university and the nation has inspired the academic world to continue innovating and adapting to changing times.
“The UGM community expresses gratitude for Professor Munawar’s dedication, especially to the UGM Faculty of Engineering. His scholarly practices and works will pave the way for future scholarship,” concluded the vice-rector.
