Universitas Gadjah Mada is mourning the passing of Professor of the Department of Agricultural Microbiology, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (Agriculture UGM), Professor Sebastian Margino, who died on Thursday (Mar. 5) at the age of 72 years and 11 months. Before being laid to rest on Saturday (Mar. 7) at the UGM Family Cemetery Complex in Sawitsari, Sleman, his body was placed at Balairung Hall for members of the UGM community to pay their final respects.
On behalf of the entire UGM academic community, Professor M. Baiquni, Chair of the UGM Board of Professors, conveyed condolences.
“On behalf of the Universitas Gadjah Mada, we extend our deepest condolences to the family of Professor Sebastian Margino,” he said.
Professor Baiquni recalled the late professor as a friendly and courteous colleague who always created a sense of comfort in his surroundings. He was also known for his dedication to scholarship, as reflected in his extensive publications in books and journals, particularly in the field he specialized in Agricultural Biotechnology.
According to Professor Baiquni, the late professor was one of UGM’s exemplary figures.
“Not only did he devote great attention to academic work, but Professor Sebastian Margino was also one of UGM’s finest scholars who consistently worked hard and dedicated his energy and time to the development of the university. He never ceased contributing to UGM,” he recalled.
Professor Baiquni also noted that Professor Sebastian delivered his inaugural professorial address on May 18, 2002. At the time, he presented a lecture titled “Microbiology in the Perspective of Agricultural Biotechnology: Prospects and Challenges.”

In the biography read by the Dean of the UGM Faculty of Agriculture, Jaka Widada, Ph.D., it was noted that Professor Sebastian completed his undergraduate degree in Agricultural Microbiology at UGM and later pursued his master’s and doctoral studies at the University of Tokyo, Japan. He had served as a lecturer at UGM since 1979 and received numerous awards in recognition of his long-standing dedication.
