On Thursday (November 23), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) inaugurated Professor Tri Kuntoro Priyambodo as a professor of computer systems and networks at the UGM Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
During the inauguration ceremony at the UGM Senate Hall, he delivered a speech titled “Recent Developments in Computer System and Network Research and its Impact on Future Community Welfare Along with its Challenges.”
Professor Priyambodo talked about the design and development of technology, systems, and services that prioritize humans at their center, known as Industry 5.0. The impact of Industry 5.0, he said, extends to the transformation of society, giving rise to a new society, Society 5.0.
“The transformation of the digital society focuses more on social and humanitarian aspects than tools and technology, as seen in Industry 4.0. Its core development is the sustainability and welfare of humans,” the professor explained.
He further explained that Society 5.0 is the idea of solving societal problems, a super-smart and futuristic society where everyone can enjoy a high-quality and comfortable life through the full integration of cyberspace and physical space, making full use of information and communication technology.
To ensure sustainable development in all aspects of community life, such as education, health, democracy, and the economy, society needs to have a positive relationship with technology.
“Industry 5.0 is more than just a trend. Society 5.0 will open up opportunities for a knowledgeable global industry and society. However, several issues still need to be addressed to usher in Society 5.0 and Industry 5.0,” Professor Priyambodo said.
He stated that one of the main goals of digital transformation is to ensure that society continues to live innovatively and creatively. Therefore, universities and the business world will play an increasingly important role in achieving this goal.
In the effort to advance society towards realizing Society 5.0, universities, besides advancing technology, must also be responsible for improving society’s digital technology literacy, moving from a general curriculum towards personalized perceptions and education.
“The development of information technology must be accompanied by initiatives to develop industry innovators and improve the literacy of every citizen as we move towards a truly community-centered way of life,” he expressed.
“As discussed above, universities have a huge responsibility to accelerate digital technology literacy in society.”
According to him, universities must be able to adopt digital technology and transform learning in line with the expected stages of digital transformation in society. This learning system can maximize the use of the latest digital technology, including guiding the ethical and wise use of ChatGPT.
“More importantly, the academic community must be able to counteract the FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and YOLO (You Only Live Once) lifestyles that are now widely adopted by the young generation,” Professor Priyambodo concluded.
