The UGM Community Service Program (KKN-PPM UGM) team “Kita Morotai” organized a running event titled Rao Run (Fun Run) 5K in Posi-Posi Village, Morotai Island Regency, North Maluku, on Saturday (Jan. 17). The event attracted 154 runners from various age groups, including children and adults, as well as local government leaders. It formed part of the community service program carried out by the UGM students.
The Unit-Level Student Coordinator of the Kita Morotai team, Rasya Wahyu Anggita, said the activity aimed to promote a healthy lifestyle and foster a spirit of sportsmanship among the people of Morotai Island.
Anggita expressed gratitude that the sports event successfully captured the enthusiasm of people across generations, from children to adults.
“The total number of participants reached 154. What is particularly encouraging is that most participants were children, totaling 88, followed by 29 teenagers and 37 adults,” she said on Tuesday (Jan. 20).
Beyond serving as a sports event, Anggita explained that the activity was also intended to introduce Morotai Island’s tourism potential, as the stunning landscape of Rao Island provided scenic views along the running route.
“The route offered runners a unique experience, showcasing beautiful natural scenery throughout the course,” she noted.

One of the participants of the Rao Run 2026, Jeremi, shared his positive impression of the event.
“The event was fun, enjoyable, and designed to be as enjoyable as possible. Even though I had to stop early because I’m not used to exercising, I was happy. The event was successful, well organized, and safe,” Jeremi said enthusiastically.
Pulau Rao District Head Sherly Tamadarage reflected on the event’s lively, warm atmosphere as she flagged off the runners. She expressed appreciation for the participation of all parties and residents who helped enliven the event.
Participants came not only from Posi-Posi Village but also from neighboring villages such as Saminyamau, Aru, Burung, Lou Madoro, and Leo-Leo, as well as from outside the district.
“This activity is not only a sporting event, but also a means to increase community participation in positive activities in Rao Island. The presence of everyone today reflects a sense of togetherness and solidarity that we must continue to uphold,” she said.

Anggita added that the running event received support from sponsors, including Avo Innovation and Technology, Waskita Karya, Rumah Mentor Indonesia (RUMI), PT Nusa Karya Arindo, PLN Nusantara Power, PT Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN), and CV Tunas Mekar Mulya.
Going forward, the Kita Morotai team will organize the Rao Football Tournament 2026 as part of the lead-up to the Rao Rayo Festival, scheduled for February. These activities aim not only to promote healthy lifestyles and sportsmanship, but also to cultivate sports awareness among the younger generation on Rao Island.
“This agenda is expected to spark enthusiasm among residents to increase physical activity while strengthening social bonds between villages,” she concluded.
