UGM Academic Hospital (RSA UGM) is expanding to improve public healthcare services. UGM Rector Ova Emilia, BPJS Kesehatan President Director Ali Ghufron Mukti, and RSA UGM President Director Darwito attended the groundbreaking ceremony for three new buildings: a private inpatient wing, a cardiology wing, and an oncology building.
The event took place at the RSA UGM courtyard on Friday, Apr. 4, 2025.
The groundbreaking ceremony featured the use of three special stones.
RSA UGM President Director Dr. Darwito explained that the stones were taken from the Progo River, Opak River, and Mount Merapi, each with unique geographical and geological significance.
“These three sites mark the boundaries of Yogyakarta as determined by Prince Mangkubumi, the founder of Yogyakarta. We hope these buildings will embody the strength of the Mataram Kingdom,” he stated.
Rector Emilia, President Director Darwito, President Director Mukti, representatives from RSA UGM’s Board of Supervisors, and representatives from the Yogyakarta Provincial Health Office carried out the groundbreaking, all wearing vests and construction helmets to mark the solemnity of the moment.
This project is a major component of RSA UGM’s expansion based on a pre-established grand design.
Plans indicate that the right and left wings will each have 12 floors, while the central building will have 14 floors.
The development of these three buildings is based on observed needs in the field that have yet to be widely met.
The target is for the construction to be completed and the facilities to be operational by 2027.
Rector Emilia praised the courage and strong commitment embodied in RSA UGM’s vision.
She hoped the hospital would serve as a leading example in healthcare services, education, and research in line with the university’s tri-dharma (three pillars of higher education).
“In the future, we plan to establish a dedicated education unit to support the development of medicines and medical devices within our beloved institution,” she said.
The groundbreaking ceremony coincided with the special occasion of RSA UGM’s 13th anniversary.
With the construction of these three new buildings, RSA UGM is expected to further enhance its comprehensive healthcare services and support the continuous advancement of medical science.
