TVR Parlemen Indonesia initiated a talent recruitment drive at the Department of Communication Science, UGM Faculty of Social and Political Sciences on Thursday (Feb. 29).
This joint program between parliamentary media and UGM spans two days, from Feb. 29 to Mar. 1, 2024, aiming to select five promising young talents from the campus who will potentially serve as news anchors for TVR Parlemen.
“The longstanding collaboration between the UGM Faculty of Social and Political Sciences and the parliament underscores the significance of this event, which has been in the works for several months,” remarked Dr. Nyarwi Ahmad, Head of the UGM Communication Science Program.
“The collaboration began when representatives from TVR Parlemen approached us. It’s crucial to enhance public awareness about parliamentary proceedings. Positive developments in parliament often go unnoticed, while even minor issues garner widespread attention.”
TVR Parlemen, established in 2007, serves as a public relations news channel conveying information from the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) to the public. Beyond delivering informative news, it acts as a bridge between the public and the government.
On its 17th anniversary, TVR Parlemen is dedicated to recruiting young talents through university collaborations and providing students with career prospects before graduation.
“This initiative, led by the television and parliamentary reporting section, aims to familiarize the public with parliamentary programs and bring TV and Radio Parlemen closer to the masses,” said Suprihartini, Deputy for Meeting Affairs, Secretariat General of DPR.
“Through this program, we aim to raise students’ awareness of parliamentary initiatives, ensuring ongoing communication of our endeavors.”
TVR Parlemen also plays a pivotal role in shaping public perception and trust towards parliament.
Amidst the digital age, fostering interest in journalism presents challenges. The rapid turnover of information in digital media has led to uncontrollable dissemination of hoaxes and misinformation.
Yet, journalism holds a crucial role in society, involving gathering, sorting, and presenting credible information—an arduous task compared to the rapid spread of misinformation on social media.
“Journalism distinguishes itself from mere journalistic practices, which can now be automated with Artificial Intelligence (AI). The essence of journalism, however, remains irreplaceable,” said Imam Wahyudi, a practitioner and media expert who graduated from the faculty.
“Journalism is rooted in two principles: delivering credible news and advocating for societal interests. Aspiring journalists should understand these principles.”
The collaboration between TVR Parlemen and the Department of Communication Science at UGM aligns with sustainable development goals (SDGs) 4, quality education, and 17, partnerships for the goals. Through such collaborations, additional programs will emerge to support budding young talents in the future.
