Hundreds of Universitas Gadjah Mada’s (UGM) academic community gathered for a prayer service to honor the memory of Septian Eka Rahmadi and Bagus Adi Prayogo, who lost their lives in a marine accident in the waters of Debut, Southeast Maluku. The collective prayer was held on Thursday, Jul. 3, 2025, at 15:30 WIB at the Balairung of UGM.
The solemn prayer session was led by Professor Agung Budiyanto.
Attending the ceremony were university leaders, faculty members, lecturers, staff, and students, all offering their prayers for the victims and strength for the families they left behind.
“These two young men passed away while on a noble mission, in the pursuit of knowledge, striving for goodness in the community,” expressed Professor Budiyanto.
Prayers were offered for both Septian and Bagus, hoping that their good deeds and acts of charity would be accepted and that they would be granted the best place by His side.
UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia expressed her deepest condolences over the passing of two of the nation’s brightest young individuals.
“On behalf of UGM, I express our profound sorrow. They were intelligent, active students who had dedicated themselves to environmental causes,” she stated.
As previously reported, the late Bagus was an undergraduate student at the UGM Faculty of Forestry (Forestry UGM), while Septian was enrolled in the undergraduate Information Engineering Program, Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Engineering, at the UGM Faculty of Engineering (FT UGM).
On Tuesday, Jul. 1, 2025, both students participated in a coral reef revitalization program with five other students from the KKN-PPM Manyeuw Unit and local residents.
Due to high waves and strong winds, the speedboat they were on capsized, causing Septian and Bagus to be swept away by the current.
Septian was confirmed to have died in the accident, while Bagus was initially declared missing and later found deceased that same evening.
Five students were rescued, some of whom required intensive medical care at a hospital.
The UGM Directorate of Community Service (DPkM UGM) coordinated with local government authorities, the field supervising lecturer, and the Kagama in Maluku chapter to ensure that the handling and repatriation of the victims’ remains were carried out meticulously.
On Wednesday, Jul. 2, 2025, the remains of Bagus arrived at Juanda Airport and were immediately transported to his family home in Butoh Village, Ngasem District, Bojonegoro Regency.
The remains of Septian were flown the following morning, Thursday, Jul. 3, 2025, to his hometown in Brang Biji Village, Sumbawa District, West Nusa Tenggara.
“I would like to express my gratitude to the local community, the regional authorities, and everyone involved in the repatriation process,” said Rector Emilia.
