Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and the Indonesia Waqf Agency (BWI) have forged a partnership to support the National Movement for Cash Waqf (GWNU) for education, research, community service, and the development of waqf assets at UGM.
The signing of the memorandum of understanding was conducted by UGM’s Vice-Rector for Planning, Finance, and Information Systems, Professor Supriyadi, and the Chairperson of BWI, Professor Mohammad Nuh, at the UGM Faculty of Economics and Business, on Tuesday (13/6).
During the event, a cooperation agreement was also signed between the Faculty of Economics and BWI, focusing on developing and maintaining the Indonesia Waqf Accounting and Management System (SAMAWI), internship programs, and career mentoring for students.
Vice Dean for Finance, Assets, and Human Resources, Dr. Gumilang Aryo Sahadewo, and BWI’s Vice Chairperson, Dr. Imam Teguh Saptono, signed this faculty-level agreement.
Professor Supriyadi said that with this agreement, UGM would begin placing funds with BWI.
“We hope these funds can be managed effectively and bring greater benefits to UGM and the wider community,” Professor Supriyadi said.
The Chairperson of BWI, Professor Mohammad Nuh, stated that through this collaboration, UGM and BWI aim to promote waqf among the entire UGM community.
In the future, UGM will also allocate a portion of its endowment funds to be managed through a Cash Waqf Linked Sukuk (CWLS) instrument through BWI.
“Several state universities have already placed their endowment funds with BWI, and UGM will follow suit,” the BWI chairperson added.
In addition to signing the MoU and cooperation agreement, the event also featured the launch of the SAMAWI application and a waqf seminar with keynote speaker Professor Mohammad Nuh.
It also included a presentation by Dr. Imam Teguh Saptono, highlighting the importance of reporting waqf activities to waqf authorities, and Professor Mahfud Solihin, who discussed the ease of reporting waqf based on PSAK 112 through the SAMAWI application.
Professor Solihin mentioned that the SAMAWI application had been developed since 2020 through research funded by the Indonesia Endowment Funds for Education (LPDP). The development of this application aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and productivity in waqf management.
“This application helps trustees to be more transparent, accountable, and productive in managing waqf,” he explained.
Currently, the application is web-based. However, SAMAWI will also be developed in Android and iOS versions.
“This application assists trustees in reporting waqf and can provide real-time updates. We hope this application will benefit the Indonesian community as a whole,” he concluded.
