Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) officially signed a cooperation charter with Elsewedy Electric on Wednesday (Oct. 2) at the UGM UC Hotel, Yogyakarta.
This collaboration aims to bridge and strengthen connections between higher education institutions and the industrial sector.
The signing session of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was attended by Professor Puji Astuti, UGM’s Director of Partnerships and Global Relations, and Elsewedy Electric’s executive board.
“We are pleased to collaborate with Elsewedy Electric, as we are also striving to enhance cooperation in the engineering field. Hopefully, this will open up career development opportunities for our students,” said Professor Astuti.
The collaboration with Elsewedy Electric focuses on applying education, research, and community service. This includes providing opportunities for fresh graduates and UGM alumni to pursue careers at Elsewedy Electric.
Elsewedy Electric is a global company that provides energy for industries, infrastructure, and digital sectors. Established in 1938, Elsewedy has expanded its business to more than 110 countries.
Based in Asia and Africa, the company actively promotes clean energy through digitalization, decarbonization, and sustainable transition. Walid Tayel, Elsewedy Electric’s Group Chief Human Resources Officer, hoped this partnership would attract students’ interest in engineering and electrification.
“Indonesia and Egypt have long-standing relations. We have 40,000 Indonesian students studying in Egypt, and we guarantee that UGM students can gain the best experience at our company,” said Tayel.
Through the MoU, Tayel stated that the company is committed to providing internship opportunities for UGM students, organizing business counseling sessions, research collaboration, and student competitions.
In line with this, John Barsoum, Human Resources Director, mentioned that industrial partnerships with universities hold significant potential.
“We want to grow and expand our business while also building partnerships. Indonesia has great potential, as do its universities, especially in the engineering field,” he remarked.
He also highlighted that Elsewedy operates seven business lines worldwide, including cable manufacturing, electronic products, machinery and construction, digital solutions, infrastructure investment, electrical networks, and education.
Following the MoU signing, the event continued with the Elsewedy Electric Career Day session, which was attended by dozens of UGM students.
Elsewedy conducted a Graduate Development Program (GDP) for UGM students as part of their commitment. This program consists of intensive training, workplace environment orientation, work effectiveness improvement, and internship opportunities at the company.
Through this initiative, UGM graduates are expected to gain competencies that align with industry needs, ultimately contributing to improving employment rates in Indonesia.
