Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Central Information Commission of the Republic of Indonesia (KIP RI) on Thursday, Jul. 3, marking a strengthened collaboration in advancing public information transparency through cutting-edge technology and the development of a dedicated study center.
UGM Rector, Professor Ova Emilia, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to promoting transparency as an integral part of public service within the academic environment.
“Anyone working within a nation has a responsibility to deliver information to the public. When someone holds a position in an institution, it becomes their obligation to provide information that is open and valid,” stated Professor Emilia at the UGM campus.
She added that UGM is currently preparing several technological initiatives to support public transparency. One such initiative is the upcoming launch of the University Information Center located at the Innovation and Creativity Center (GIK UGM), which will be equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and both online and offline services.
Additionally, UGM is developing a Virtual Campus Tour powered by Virtual Reality (VR), allowing prospective students and their families to explore the campus virtually without needing to visit in person.
UGM has also implemented a whistleblowing system on its official website as part of its internal oversight and public empowerment efforts. The system enables individuals to report suspected violations openly.
“It functions like a hotline accessible to everyone for reporting issues affecting students, lecturers, or the public. We have a dedicated team that follows up on these reports,” Professor Emilia explained.
In line with these initiatives, Dr. Donny Yusgiantoro, Chair of KIP RI, announced plans to establish a Public Information Study Center at UGM. This center is expected to support certification programs and be integrated into higher education curricula.
“UGM could establish a dedicated study center focused on public information, which could offer certification and even courses on information literacy and transparency,” said Dr. Yusgiantoro.
The signing of this memorandum of understanding reflects a shared commitment between academic institutions and state bodies to promote a modern, transparent, and technology-based approach to public information. This collaboration is anticipated to serve as a national model for inclusive and accountable public information governance.
