Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) welcomed a delegation from Newcastle University (NU) on Thursday (Jun. 20), led by Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Professor Nigel Harkness, Deputy Director of NU Business School Professor Gabriele Vossberg, and Head of Politics at the School of Geography, Politics, and Sociology Dr. Simon Philpott.
The delegation was received by UGM’s Vice-Rector for Education and Teaching, Professor Wening Udasmoro, Vice-Dean for Academic Affairs and Student Affairs, Professor Poppy Sulistyaning Winanti, and Secretary of the Directorate of Partnerships and Global Relations, Dr. Wiratni.
In a statement to reporters on Monday (Jun. 24), Professor Udasmoro said that the NU delegation’s visit aimed to expand collaboration areas.
“This visit aims to enhance UGM and renew the potential for broader cooperation,” she said.
The vice-rector explained that UGM and NU began formal cooperation in 2018 by signing a memorandum of understanding.
During the meeting, it was agreed to develop joint summer schools and a one-semester student exchange program, with NU sending students to participate in a short program at UGM.
“A student exchange program was agreed upon,” she said.
Additionally, Professor Udasmoro mentioned that NU has research and studies in cultural protection and heritage, opening up opportunities for collaboration in research and education on natural dyes and studies on heritage city conservation and management.
“We can propose to the ministry to include researchers from social sciences if possible to add a humanities aspect amidst technological developments,” she said.
