Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ninevah University, Iraq.
The ceremony took place in the Leadership Meeting Room, UGM Central Building, and was attended by Professor Wening Udasmoro, UGM Vice Rector for Education and Teaching, and Professor Osama Ismael Al-Mashhadani, President of Ninevah University.
In her remarks, Professor Udasmoro expressed that this partnership marks the beginning of collaboration between UGM and Ninevah University and signifies the strong relationship between Indonesia and Iraq.
“This is not just the beginning of a partnership between our universities but also the start of a collaboration between Indonesia and Iraq,” she stated.
Professor Udasmoro also highlighted the challenges UGM has faced in establishing partnerships with institutions in the Middle East. She hopes this collaboration with Ninevah University will provide a gateway to more regional opportunities.
“UGM has established relationships with many universities, but we still face difficulties entering Middle Eastern countries,” she added.
Professor Osama Ismael Al-Mashhadani, President of Ninevah University, expressed optimism about the partnership.
“We hope that within a year of signing this MoU, we can welcome as many students as possible from UGM,” he said.
During the event, Ninevah University introduced its Study in Iraq Initiative, a program launched by the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
The initiative aims to enhance cultural exchange and international collaboration by offering scholarships to international students. The scholarships cover tuition and accommodation costs, with implementation scheduled for March 15, 2025.
As part of the discussion, UGM showcased its flagship programs, including community service initiatives. Professor Udasmoro emphasized that UGM’s community service programs have attracted participation from students from various countries, such as South Korea, Japan, the United States, Germany, and Southeast Asia.
“Many students from these countries collaborate with us through community service programs to bring positive impact to local communities,” she explained.
This collaboration is expected to create more opportunities for students and faculty from both universities to engage in academic activities, research, and exchange programs. With the launch of the Study in Iraq Initiative next year, the prospects for UGM students to continue their studies in Iraq become increasingly tangible.
The signing of the MoU marks a significant milestone in strengthening ties between UGM and Ninevah University, further bolstering UGM’s position on the global stage.
