The Canggate Team, hailing from the UGM Faculty of Engineering, has triumphed in the Campus Gate Design Competition hosted by the University of Lampung (Unila).
This collaborative event between Unila and the Indonesian Institute of Architects (IAI) unfolded from Nov. 19 to Dec. 4, 2023.
Comprising Dr. Alexander Rani Suryandono, along with four students from UGM’s Professional Architect Education Program, Class of 2022—Jundullah Salman Alfaruq, Naufal Mufid, Diena Aslama Scientifionisa Kurniapramono, and Zeka Oktaviana Putri—the Canggate Team clinched victory with a gate design inspired by the Cangget dance.
The term “Canggate” was chosen to embody this gate as it encapsulates the essence of the younger generation’s character.
The UGM Canggate Team perceives the Cangget dance as representing the transformative phases in an individual’s life within Lampung’s cultural tradition. This concept is embraced as a beacon of hope for students to evolve positively.
“We adopted the concept of Cangget as a symbol of students’ transformation towards becoming better individuals in their academic journey,” explained Zeka Putri.
Putri elaborated that the Cangget dance was selected due to its symbolization of universal and adaptive characteristics. Furthermore, this dance is replete with meaning, encompassing values of respect, wisdom, unity, justice, protection, and the preservation of honor.
Jundullah Alfaruq added that the Canggate gate design embodies three primary points.
The first is “Unila as a Green Campus.” The gate’s landscape will feature a drainage system to prevent rainwater accumulation, a line of shade trees, and bike and pedestrian lanes, encouraging students to embrace a sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle.
The second is “Unila as a Place for Everyone,” showing an inclusive design with spacious pedestrian paths accessible to individuals with disabilities.
The design is also equipped with ramps and guiding blocks, ensuring that the Unila environment is inviting and open to everyone, regardless of status.
Third, with “Unila as an Enjoyable Environment,” the gate crafted a unique atmosphere with an organic landscape, diverse vegetation, and direct sunlight, providing a distinct ambiance from the formal and rigid campus environment.
Bougainvillea flowers, serving as decorations, resonate with the spirit of “Unila in Bloom, Clean, Cultured, Full of Memories.”
