The Catholic community worldwide is mourning the passing of Pope Francis, the Supreme Leader of the Catholic Church, who passed away on Monday, Apr. 21, 2025. This profound sorrow is also felt by the Catholic community at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM).
In response to this loss, the administrators of St. Athanasius Church, located at the UGM Faith & Spirituality Center, organized a series of prayers and tributes. The Eucharistic Celebration was held on Wednesday (Apr. 23) at St. Athanasius Church to commemorate the third day after Pope Francis’ passing.
Father Agustinus Daryanto, the Spiritual Advisor for UGM Catholic Students, led the Mass. In his homily, he conveyed that Pope Francis’s passing was a profound loss for Catholics and the world.
As the spiritual leader of Catholics globally, Pope Francis inspired many, especially young people, to live their faith with sincerity, social awareness, and the courage to seek truth.
“Pope Francis always reminded us that the Church must be present in the world, embracing the marginalized and bringing hope,” said Father Daryanto.
Professor Regina Titi Christinawati Tandelilin, a representative of the St. Athanasius Church committee, also shared expressions of condolence. She expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a pope known for his humility and simplicity.
“The Holy Father was a spiritual leader who truly cared about humanitarian and environmental issues,” she said.
Professor Tandelilin noted that his commitment to interfaith dialogue and world peace will live on as a lasting legacy. Despite the profound loss, the congregation of St. Athanasius Church also expressed gratitude for the guidance and spirit of love he instilled as a foundation for life.
Professor Tandelilin also highlighted many of Pope Francis’ enduring legacies. Among them are several important encyclicals, including Laudato Si’, which emphasizes the importance of caring for the environment as a shared human responsibility, and Fratelli Tutti, which promotes universal brotherhood and social friendship across religious, cultural, and national boundaries.
“Pope Francis will remain a symbol of hope and change for many people around the world. The presence of the faithful at this Eucharistic celebration reflects their love and respect for the great shepherd. He served as a role model and dedicated his life to the Church and humanity. Though he has passed, we inherit his spirit of love, humility, and boundless service,” she added.
