The UGM Digital Transformation Bureau held a virtual Focus Group Discussion on Wednesday, October 11, to strengthen the UGM Artificial Intelligence (AI) Society. This aligns with UGM’s transformation journey to become a smart digital university.
According to the Rector of UGM, Professor Ova Emilia, MD, using artificial intelligence and automation technology can make various tasks more efficient despite inevitable impacts. In this context, higher education institutions need to respond wisely to these challenges.
“While adapting to these changes, many people indeed feel worried. Change cannot be avoided; it must be addressed by accepting the challenges that arise,” she said during the opening address.
The rector emphasized that the UGM community does not need to fear the threat of artificial intelligence, which is often said to result in job loss. According to her, technology brings potential for creative work.
She hopes that UGM can optimize the use of technology to support various services.
After reaching the smart digital university stage, UGM will advance toward becoming an intelligence university that uses artificial intelligence and automation technology more extensively.
“The purpose of this discussion is to gather information and ideas. Hopefully, through communication, we will receive many extraordinary proposals for the future of UGM,” she added.
This FGD was moderated by the Head of the Digital Transformation Bureau, Dr. Mardhani Riasetiawan.
The speakers included the UGM Director of Research, Professor Mirwan Ushada, who discussed the direction of artificial intelligence in UGM’s research; Dr. Irwan Endrayanto Aluicius, who talked about artificial intelligence for education; and Anis Fuad, who presented an AI use case.
Furthermore, Professor Agus Harjoko explained the management of the Deep Learning Research Center at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Dr. Igi Ardiyanto elaborated on the management of the Artificial Intelligence Center at the Faculty of Engineering.
The FGD was closed by Professor Yusril Yusuf, who provided insights into research facilities support.
“UGM AI Society was initiated some time ago, but we want to accelerate to achieve our desire to become a smart digital university and an intelligence university,” Dr. Mardhani Riasetiawan concluded.
