According to the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2024, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has maintained its position as a top global university.
The ranking results, released on Wednesday (Jun. 12), place UGM in the Top 100 World rankings for three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): 66th for SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 56th for SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and 89th for SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).
UGM ranks 17th globally for SDG 1 (No Poverty) out of 1,093 universities worldwide.
THE also ranks UGM within the 101-200 range globally for SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals).
The rankings, compiled by global higher education analysts at THE, are based on an analysis of 2,152 universities worldwide. There was nearly a 25% increase in participating universities compared to the previous year.
The number of universities analyzed for individual SDG rankings varies. Overall, UGM ranks within the 101-200 range globally in this year’s ranking.
Professor Ova Emilia, the Rector of UGM, stated that UGM’s achievement of ranking within the Top 100 globally in three SDGs and 17th for SDG 1 demonstrates the university’s significant impact on society through its threefold mission of education, research, and community service.
“I believe what UGM has done has been recognized by global ranking institutions,” the rector told reporters on Wednesday (Jun. 19).
The rector urged UGM to maintain its position and enhance its SDG-based performance to support the Indonesian government’s goal of achieving the SDGs by 2030.
“Efforts towards this have already begun this year; UGM has established a Sustainability Office to oversee and report on SDG-related activities,” she explained.
It is known that THE is the only ranking organization that measures universities’ contributions to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promoted by the United Nations. UGM participates in all 17 SDGs in the THE University Impact Rankings 2024.
Based on contributions to the 17 SDGs, THE’s ranking methodology uses various relevant metrics for each SDG. Data collection for each metric comes from multiple sources, including data submitted by universities and bibliometric data from Elsevier.
Thousands of universities worldwide can participate in the assessment of all or some SDGs, provided they participate in at least four SDGs, with SDG 17 being mandatory.
