The UGM Faculty of Dentistry is marking its 76th anniversary this year. The pinnacle of this year’s anniversary celebration, themed “Harmony in Diversity: Building Harmony in Society 5.0,” was an open senate meeting on Tuesday (Mar. 5).
“Gratitude to our seniors, professors, and the entire Dentistry community whose dedication has propelled the faculty to its current standing,” remarked the Rector of UGM, Professor Ova Emilia.
“May this year’s anniversary ignite a renewed sense of purpose in us all to foster harmony in dental health services and oral health across Indonesia for our beloved nation.”
In her address, the rector expressed her aspirations for the faculty to maintain its innovative edge amidst the evolving landscape of challenges and opportunities.
She reiterated UGM’s commitment to facilitating the translation of innovative products from the faculty members into tangible benefits for society.
“We eagerly anticipate product innovations and advancements in education and public awareness. Research yielding innovative products holds promise, and we stand ready to shepherd them into the industry,” Rector Ova Emilia emphasized.
The roots of the UGM Faculty of Dentistry trace back to the establishment of the Dental College at Tegalyoso Hospital, Klaten, in 1948.
On Mar. 5, 1948, the college merged with the existing Medical College established in 1946 in Klaten, and later, in 1949, amalgamated with colleges in Yogyakarta to form UGM. The UGM Faculty of Dentistry was formally inaugurated on Dec. 29, 1960.
During the event, Dr. Suryono, the Dean of the UGM Faculty of Dentistry, presented an annual report on education, research, community service, and collaborative efforts.
He underscored that the array of achievements mirrors the faculty’s unwavering commitment to upholding excellence standards in dental education, research, and community engagement.
“Despite encountering various obstacles, our resolve to progress remains steadfast. We persist in pursuing innovation, collaboration, and impactful contributions to society and dental medicine,” Dr. Suryono affirmed.
The celebration also featured speeches from distinguished figures, including Rear Admiral Dr. Wawan Suridwan, Head of the Navy Dental Institution, shedding light on the role of dentistry in the Indonesian National Armed Forces, alongside a scientific discourse by Dr. Julita Hendrartini.
