The UGM Esports Student Activity Unit won the Esports Campus Leader (ECL) 2024 competition, organized by the Indonesian Esports Association (ESI) of Yogyakarta on Sunday (May 19).
Ten teams from various universities in the Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY), including UNY, UIN Sunan Kalijaga, UII, UKDW, Ukrim, UTY, AMIKOM, UAJY, and UMY, participated in the Yogyakarta championship. In this competition, the UGM team demonstrated superior strategy and gaming skills.
Thobagus Dhani, the UGM Esports Team Manager, stated that the competition used a mobile game format conducted in a league and continuous format.
“I think this inter-campus competition format is excellent for regenerating players each year,” he explained Thursday (May 23).
In this Esports competition, the UGM team comprised several players assigned specific roles and duties during the game.
Team members included Riefky Bagastria as Renin, Evandhika Agna Maulana (Akane), Muhammad Zidane Septian Irsyadi (Dan), M. Naufal (Miruku), Muhammad Auguzt Riansyah (Aero), Lanang Timur Anjo (Joezy), and two primary players in the National Student League, Melvin Harits Tyaga (aLpg) and Michael Huang (Mich).
According to Yohana Kayanaveda, the Head of UGM Esports, participating in this competition allows students to channel their interests and talents in esports.
“The achievements by the UGM Esports team are undoubtedly valuable, not just for the team but also for the university, as they compete against other universities at provincial and national levels,” she stated.
Previously, in the National Student Esports League, the UGM team secured 4th place in the Men’s category. This tournament reflects the Indonesian Esports Association’s commitment to inclusive competitions for all participants. This league is also set to become the standard for student esports competitions in Indonesia.
As known, UGM Esports serves as a platform for students with esports talents to channel their interests and excel academically.
Dhani mentioned that UKM Esports members are trained not only as athletes or pro players but also as individuals ready to apply their intellectuality in the esports industry, becoming intellectual gamers.
Dhani hopes that the team will continue to grow and serve as a bridge for students wishing to enter the esports world.
“Esports is not merely about gaming; it is an industry that offers promising opportunities and involves many parties, providing numerous job opportunities,” Dhani concluded.
As noted, the Indonesian Esports Association (PBESI), the governing body of national esports, is now under the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI).
Therefore, prospective students wishing to enroll in UGM can input their achievements in this field through the PBUB Sports and Arts cluster admission track.
