The Department of Fisheries at the UGM Faculty of Agriculture celebrated its 61st Anniversary on Friday, Aug. 30, 2024, at the Harjono Danoesastro Auditorium under the theme Building a Maritime Spirit, Contribution to the Nation.
Professor Alim Isnansetyo, Head of the Department of Fisheries, presented the department’s annual performance report during the celebration.
This was followed by a scientific lecture delivered by Miftakhul Munir, an alumnus of the Fisheries Department class of 1995, titled Shrimp Farming Innovation: The Key to Economic Success and Environmental Conservation.
The event also included the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the UGM Faculty of Agriculture, PT Riung Agro Lestari, and Shrimp Club Indonesia.
The MoU was signed by Miftakhul Munir, Director of PT Riung Agro Lestari, and Haris Muhtadi, representing Shrimp Club Indonesia. Meanwhile, Professor Subejo, Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, and Cooperation, represented the Faculty of Agriculture.
In his speech, Professor Subejo stated that the Department of Fisheries was officially established on Sept. 1, 1963, as part of the Faculty of Agriculture. Over the years, the department has made significant progress in its contributions to the university’s tri-dharma (three primary responsibilities: education, research, and community service).
“Indonesia’s immense potential in the marine and fisheries sector poses both a challenge and an opportunity for the Department of Fisheries to continue advancing,” he remarked.
In his report, Professor Isnansetyo highlighted the various developments achieved by the Department of Fisheries, including improved facilities such as the Integrated Laboratory, which will support research in Aquatic Nanotechnology and Biotechnology.
“Skilled human resources and adequate facilities also support this. We hope that the Department of Fisheries will continue to enhance the quality of its tri-dharma activities and make a broader impact at both the national and international levels,” he explained.
Several events were held to celebrate the 61st anniversary of the Department of Fisheries. The opening event featured a group exercise session, followed by the XXI Annual National Seminar on Fisheries and Marine Research and the 2nd Summer Course on Tropical Aquaculture and Fisheries Management.
Activities such as visits to the graves of the department’s founders and predecessors, outreach to retirees, health check-ups, and family gatherings were also held. The celebration concluded with the main event marking the peak of the 61st Anniversary of the Department of Fisheries.
