The UGM Faculty of Animal Science (Animal Science UGM) organized a contest for PE goats, PO cattle, and fattened cattle on Thursday (Oct. 17) at the Integrated Livestock Market, Kulon Progo.
This event was held to celebrate the 73rd anniversary of Kulon Progo and the 11th Lustrum of Animal Science UGM.
The head of the event committee, Dr. Sulvia Dwi Astuti, stated that there were ten competition categories, including four for PE goats, four for PO cattle, and two for fattened cattle.
Now in its ninth year, this contest was held in collaboration with the Office of Agriculture and Food of Kulon Progo Regency.
Dr. Astuti explained that according to data from the Office of Agriculture and Food of Kulon Progo Regency, the population of PE goats in Kulon Progo reached 42,474 as of January 2023.
These animals are spread across the subdistricts of Girimulyo, Samigaluh, Kalibawang, Kokap, Pengasih, and surrounding areas. With such a large population, Kulon Progo has significant potential to produce high-quality PE goats.
Therefore, academic support, guidance, and development are needed, especially from Animal Science UGM.
“This livestock contest, as an annual event, also serves to identify high-potential PE goats for further development,” added Dr. Astuti.
The Chief Judge of the PO Cattle Contest, Professor Dyah Maharani, stated that beef cattle farming, including the Ongole Crossbreed (PO) and other fattening cattle, has excellent potential in Kulon Progo.
“PO cattle are among the superior breeds widely raised by farmers in Kulon Progo. These cattle are known for their adaptability to tropical climates and resistance to diseases, making them ideal for being raised in Kulon Progo, where the geographical conditions are favorable,” said Professor Maharani.
